By marrying a female fifteen years more youthful, preindustrial Sami males maximized their surviving offspring
Men marry more youthful ladies and females would rather marry older guys, generally speaking. But is it culture, genetics or even the environment that drives this kind of choice—and can there be an optimal age distinction? Brand new studies have shown that, at the very least for the Sami folks of preindustrial Finland, guys should marry a female nearly fifteen years their junior to optimize their likelihood of obtaining the many offspring that survive.
“We studied just how age that is parental at marriage affected [families’] reproductive success among Sami individuals who married only one time within their lifetime[s],” claims ecologist Samuli Helle regarding the University of Turku in Finland. “We unearthed that marrying females 14.6 years more youthful maximized men’s lifetime reproductive success—in other terms, the sheer number of offspring surviving to age 18.”
